Amalfi coast and Villa San Marco
Amalfi coast and Villa San Marco
Your private shore excursion begins as your dedicated English-speaking driver greets you directly dockside at the Port of Naples in a premium luxury vehicle. Setting off early to enjoy the crisp morning light and beat coastal traffic, you will journey south around the curve of the bay toward one of Campania’s most remarkable yet uncrowded classical treasures: the ancient Roman resort of Stabiae. Unlike commercial Pompeii, Stabiae served as the ultimate seaside sanctuary for Rome's imperial elite, celebrated for its sprawling luxury villas (villae maritimae) perched along panoramic cliffs. Spend your morning exploring the monumental Villa San Marco, one of the largest Roman residential complexes ever excavated, spanning over 11,000 square meters. Step into the opulent lifestyle of the patrician aristocracy as you wander through its grand frescoed atrium, private thermal bath suites, and expansive central garden featuring a massive sunken swimming pool (natatio). Admire the soaring colonnaded porticoes and the panoramic triclinium (dining hall), ingeniously positioned by Roman architects to capture sweeping vistas across the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Leaving antiquity behind, your driver navigates the scenic coastal road toward the sun-drenched clifftop town of Sorrento, perched dramatically atop volcanic tuff cliffs. Spend a relaxed midday wandering through the historic center’s vibrant pedestrian lanes, browsing family-run workshops renowned for traditional inlaid woodwork (intarsio). Pause for a leisurely lunch at an authentic seaside trattoria, savoring fresh Gulf seafood and handmade regional pasta. If you wish, enhance your time in Sorrento with a visit to a local olive oil mill (frantoio), discovering centuries-old pressing traditions followed by a guided tasting of estate extra virgin olive oils drizzled over freshly baked bread. In the afternoon, continue along the spectacular twists of the Amalfi Drive toward Positano, the vertical jewel of the Divine Coast. Tumbled gracefully down the steep cliffside to the azure Mediterranean, Positano radiates timeless seaside glamour. Enjoy free time to stroll down winding, bougainvillea-framed pedestrian paths, browse chic boutiques famous for bespoke handmade leather sandals and breezy linen apparel (Moda Positano), or savor an espresso or chilled glass of Prosecco at a seaside café along the Spiaggia Grande. Following an extraordinary day bridging Roman aristocratic retreats with world-famous coastal scenery, sit back and unwind on a smooth, punctual return drive to the Port of Naples, arriving comfortably ahead of your cruise ship’s departure. Important Shore Excursion Details & Custom Options: Recommended Early Departure (7:30 AM): An early morning departure at 7:30 AM is strongly recommended to beat coastal traffic, maximize your leisure time in Sorrento and Positano, and ensure a completely stress-free day. Guaranteed On-Time Return to Port: Departure and travel schedules are meticulously managed throughout the day to ensure you return dockside well ahead of your ship’s all-aboard time. Private Licensed Guide for Stabiae: You are welcome to explore the evocative ruins of Villa San Marco independently, or we can arrange an expert private licensed archaeological guide to illuminate the architectural wonders, private lifestyle, and exquisite frescoes of this ancient seaside retreat. Optional Olive Oil Mill Tasting: An artisan olive oil visit and tasting in Sorrento can be seamlessly integrated into your itinerary upon request at the time of booking. Accessibility: The archaeological site of Stabiae is partially wheelchair accessible. Please inform us in advance if any members of your party require mobility assistance so we can tailor the day to your needs.
