Herculaneum, Sorrento & Positano
Herculaneum, Sorrento & Positano
Your day begins as your private English-speaking driver greets you directly dockside at the Port of Naples in a premium luxury vehicle. Setting off early to optimize your time and enjoy the calm morning light, your excursion bridges the intimate luxury of the Roman imperial elite with the breathtaking landscapes of the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast. Your morning is devoted to the archaeological site of Herculaneum (Ercolano). While neighboring Pompeii was blanketed in volcanic ash, this affluent seaside resort town was submerged under a deep, superheated flow of volcanic mud and pyroclastic material during the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This unique airtight preservation left organic materials intact that were lost elsewhere in the classical world. Spend your morning walking along ancient streets to admire intact second-story wooden architecture, carbonized timber roof beams, original sliding partition doors, and remarkably vibrant residential mosaics inside aristocratic villas such as the House of the Neptune and Amphitrite and the seaside thermal baths. Leaving antiquity behind, your driver navigates the scenic coastal drive toward Sorrento, perched dramatically on volcanic tuff cliffs high above the Bay of Naples. Take in sweeping views across the water toward Mount Vesuvius before pausing for a leisurely lunch along the scenic route or in Sorrento’s historic center. Savor authentic Campania cuisine—from fresh Mediterranean seafood and handmade pasta to local citrus-infused delicacies—and enjoy a stroll through the town's lively pedestrian lanes framed by fragrant lemon groves and artisan marquetry workshops. In the afternoon, continue along the dramatic cliffside curves of the Amalfi Drive toward Positano, the postcard-perfect vertical village cascading down the sheer mountain face. Spend a relaxed afternoon wandering its narrow, bougainvillea-framed pedestrian paths, browsing chic boutiques celebrated for bespoke handmade leather sandals and breezy linen apparel (Moda Positano), or savoring an espresso or chilled glass of Prosecco at a seaside café on the Spiaggia Grande. Following an extraordinary day combining world-class archaeology, scenic coastal vistas, and effortless Mediterranean glamour, sit back and unwind on a smooth, punctual return drive to the Port of Naples, arriving comfortably ahead of your ship’s departure. Important Shore Excursion Details & Custom Options: Recommended Early Departure (7:30 AM): An early morning departure at 7:30 AM is strongly recommended to beat coastal traffic, ensure a relaxed pace across all three destinations, and guarantee a stress-free return to port. Itinerary Sequence Flexibility: Depending on real-time traffic conditions along the coastal highway and seasonal site hours, your private driver may optimize the itinerary by visiting Positano and Sorrento first, placing Herculaneum as the final afternoon stop on your return toward Naples. Private Licensed Guide Recommendation: While you are welcome to tour the ruins independently, we highly recommend adding a private licensed archaeological guide for Herculaneum to illuminate the architectural innovations, domestic details, and dramatic survival stories of this ancient seaside retreat. Accessibility: Herculaneum features dedicated, partially wheelchair-accessible wooden boardwalks and ramps through key sections of the excavated town. Please notify us in advance if any members of your party require mobility assistance so we can ensure a seamless visit. Guaranteed On-Time Return to Port: Tour routes and schedules are actively monitored throughout the day to ensure you return dockside well in advance of your cruise ship’s all-aboard call.
